Healing with Hypnosis

(Copy of original article here)

HYPNOSIS. The very word conjures an image of someone being put to sleep. And, the word also has a mystic air about it. In reality, it is the process of, artificially producing a state, in which the subject appears to be in deep sleep, without any power of hanging his mental or physical condition, except nang the influence of some external suggestion or r.- .,on to which he is involuntarily and unconsciously obedient. On recovering from this condition, the person usually has no memory about what he has said or done.

Hypnosis, which was looked down as something negative, is now being used as a pain killer by some city doctors during childbirth. Since the last four years, Dr Rajalaxmi has been using this method, for her patients. Dr Rajalaxmi, who runs Stree Clinic on Apte road, practices hypnotherapy during childbirth and also to improve the general health of individuals. According to her, "Hypnosis is a slow process. And when the mother-to-be comes to us for renatal check-up, we slowly start conditioning her mind. We tell her that she would be able to bear the pain during childbirth. We keep telling her this to the end. During the actual period, the patient is asked to relax her body. She is given verbal suggestions which helps in reducing the pain." Dr Rajalaxmi is confident that her patients have benefitted by it. Says Madhuri Desai, a former patient, this method really helped me to stay calm during delivery. I felt as if I was under sedation.
"We don't let the patient go into trance, where they forget what they have done, therefore there are no ill effects", says Dr Rajalaxmi. "Selection of the patient is very important. Unless the individual is firm and co-operative, nothing can be done. It is for the patient to decide whether they want to lake part or not. Nobody can compel them to it. Hypnosis is also used to cure alcoholics, but here, the patient should be aware of his bad habits and must be willig to overcome it.

Hypnosis is also being used as a therapy for curing psychosomatic diseases. Dr. Rajalaxmi felt that it would be very useful for students and people who lead a life full of stress and tension. Dr. Asha Joshi echoes the same sentiments. She is of the opinion that it will help cure students of their phobias. Both these doctors feel that hypnosis will help couples who aren't getting along well, as it will help them increase their tolerance level. It also helps to improve the mental and physical level of an individual.
"It will help students to increase their memory", added Dr. Joshi. She is a consulting anaesthesist, who has been practising in Pune since the last 18 years. She is also a reputed hypnotherapist. She has used this science for relief of labour pains and in many other fields.

She alongwith her son and Dr. Rajalaxmi are conducting classes on self hypnosis. She believes that hypnosis is more useful for self development. "This has no side effects, because a person cannot be hypnotised unless he is willing to get hypnotised. All the protective reflexes are there when the person is in a hypnotised state. He won't do anything that is against his moral code."

Coming back to self hypnosis, Dr Asha Joshi stressed on its importance. "Self hypnosis is useful in our day-to-day life. Unless we relax our mind body, we cannot continue to work further. And 90 per cent of hypnosis is actually relaxation. Therefore, a sound body and mind will help us to be more creative, bringing out the hidden potential within us. Self hypnosis helps a person to utilise his potential to the maximum", she explained.

Jyotsana Apte is for self hypnosis. Since the last 15 years she has been conducting art and craft classes. She lacked confidence and was nervous all the time. The tension was too much to bear and she could not sleep. Then, she joined the course conducted on self hypnosis and her life changed. "I am much more confident now", said Jyotsana. "I have lost the feeling'of nervousness and am able to sleep peacefully".

To help a large number of people, Shashank Joshi has designed a workshop on self development through self hypnosis. At this workshop lectures are given by eminent people on the conditioning of mind and stress management, history of hypnosis, positive thinking and mental attitude. Practicals too are conducted at this workshop.

Dr Joshi and Dr Rajalaxmi feel that students and even grown-ups can achieve positive results by joining this course. Those attending the course will be able to manage stress effectively, can achieve their goals and also overcome their fears. This will also help them increase their concentration and willpower.

According to Amit, a student of this course, "I have done much better in my studies after attending the course and practising it at home on a daily basis. It has helped me not just in my studies, but also in developing my personality. I have become much more confident now. I have overcome my shyness". Earlier he used to shy away from people and could never open his mouth to participate in a conversation.
