The Importance of remaining positive in stressful times

There are lots of things happening in our world that can derail our sense of well being.  The markets were trading with a negative sentiment when news of the Mumbai terror attacks came in.  The looming economic crisis and the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, both, threaten to change the way of life that we have known over the decades.

The outcome of the general elections in the United States of America ushers in new changes.  People in India too, will soon be paying close attention to elections to be held next year. Hence, all of us find that we are heading for times complicated by incredible challenges. So many times we feel done in by circumstances outside of our control. So many times we may get depressed with the state of the world.  Many feel a sense of dread. But does fear and dread help us in any way?  No. It’s time to stop and take our life into our own hands.

We have to remain positive and strong in this so-called crisis. We have to return to reality.  We have been living in a dream and as in most dreams we have to wake up and face the heat of the sun in our faces. We have a lot to be grateful for anyway.  We live in a country rich in tradition, culture and spirituality and we all know that we will never starve. People are kind and if we do not have food our neighbors will willingly share with us. We have good health in spite of everything, let us remember that and think of the alternative.  Once we have health, we can begin to work for what we want. Most important for us to do is to learn the lesson of our time, what is happening to us,  is a lesson from the universe that we must learn to live within our means and we have to adhere to the natural law.

It’s important to be convinced that this difficulty will not last forever.  Instead of feeling helpless, miserable and depressed its time to take positive steps to address our collective problem. However, this must start with each one of us.  We were never meant to hold on to negative experiences forever anyway. As we move on in life's journey, we must understand that there is a destination. We need to insist on happiness, even in the face of our current situation.

Happiness is a skill. It requires effort and time. Of course, if we managed our thoughts correctly we stand a good chance to be happy. Our thoughts are private and there is a world that goes on inside of us that no one else shares. We build castles and cauldrons, soothing waterfalls and fetid pits, all in our heads or minds. Instead of fetid pits wouldn’t it be better to build soothing waterfalls? How do you get up and dust off your sadness. For a beginning let’s

  1. Stop looking at so much TV - the news is bad.
  2. Engage in more exercise - go for walks with family and friends.
  3. Do a financial check up - see where your money goes – seriously.
  4. Live within your means - use cash for payment as much as possible.
  5. Make a gratitude list to counteract negativity.
  6. Try not to worry about the things you cannot change.
  7. Take action on those things we can change.
  8. Meditate and pray to heal yourself.
  9. Look for the good in things which makes us feel better.
  10. Add more humor and laughter to our daily lives

It’s so easy to slip into that misery slope. It’s so easy to blame the world for our problems; it’s so easy to see all the bad things happening around us because that’s what we give our attention to. Whatever you give attention to flourishes. The plants that you water will thrive more than those you do not water. When we are enjoying life's goodness and acknowledge that as we go through our day, we are living consciously, we are living fully, we are experiencing the moments of life and that is wonderful, freeing and living.

When you study history, you will find that a lot of people and organizations made a name for themselves and grew their businesses during recessions and downturns. These successful people and organizations all shared similar characteristics and took similar actions to thrive while others merely tried to survive. These success stories offer a blue print we can follow to thrive during tough times. They show us what is possible if we are willing to stay positive, repel fear, and take initiative.

Consider that both the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge were built during the Great Depression. Now is a time to think big, create your vision and take action. With more people living in fear and fewer people taking initiative the rewards and recognition will be greater for those willing to work hard and dedicate themselves to building a great business, product, service, and vision. As we know, there is no substitute for hard work and now is a time where those with a positive attitude and great work ethic will shine.

Every day we get a chance to be better than we were yesterday. It's like a brand new page, a brand new slate in which to write. Each day we are different than were were yesterday. It’s true that we have the power in our own hands. There is a saying that goes like this - if you change the way you look at things the things you look at change.
